Johnny Manziel Camera: CBS to Devote One Camera to Track Texas A&M QB's Every Move
ByIf Johnny Manziel does not want to be caught on camera during the upcoming Alabama game, he will have to head to the locker room tunnel, Sports Illustrated reported.
With the Texas A&M Aggies hosting the reigning National Champions Alabama Crimson Tide, the game's biggest star is getting his own camera. CBS coordinating producer for college football Craig Silver confirmed the TV network will add a camera for the sole purpose of capturing everything Johnny Manziel does.
"No matter where he is and no matter what part of the game it is, we will have a shot of it," he said. "If he is anywhere in sight of that camera, we will catch it."
To no one's surprise, ESPN chose this game out of the week-three lineup for its hugely popular College GameDay Show to visit. But GameDay producer Lee Fitting said the show will not pay the same attention to the polarizing A&M quarterback.
"I can promise you the show won't turn into 'Manziel Mania' for three hours," he said. "Will the viewer get their fill of Manziel? Sure. Will we cover every angle of the game? Yes. But will we go overboard? Absolutely not."
Silver said CBS does not have an opinion on Manziel, but are simply catering to what the sports community is talking about. He likened it to Tim Tebow and the hype he caused at all of his games with the University of Florida.
"By the time we get to kickoff, this thing will have been talked about ad nauseam throughout the sports world," Silver said. "The way I approach it is how has all this stuff affected him as a football player and affected his team."
With the second week of college football in the books, this Saturday will bring us one of the most anticipated matchups all season long when Alabama heads into College Station, Texas.
The first-ranked Crimson Tide come into the game following a bye week and a win in their season opener. The sixth-ranked Aggies are also undefeated, having won their first two games of the year. After serving his 30-minute slap-on-the-wrist timeout from the NCAA in the season opener, Manziel took the field to finish off Rice, completing 75 percent of his passes for three touchdowns. In his first full game, A&M torched Sam Houston State 65-28 and Manziel threw for 405 yards.
Alabama lost this matchup last year and it stood as the team's only loss in a championship season. Head coach Nick Saban and his team are not unhappy with the way the season played out after last season's loss, still, this is a game they want to win and which was tough to lose last year.
Manziel and the Aggies jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter of the game last year with the quarterback throwing and running all over the famed Crimson Tide defense.
"The players pretty much realize the circumstance," Saban told reporters. "We didn't play very well in the game last year... We still have a lot of work to do as a team to be able to play the way we're going to need to play to have any chance of being successful when we play out there against Texas A&M."
