Three people were killed in a car accident in New Mexico Monday night, among them were two college football players from the Texas A&M University (TAMU) and the University of Utah (UOU), ESPN reported.

Polo Manukainiu, a freshman defensive lineman at TAMU, and Gaius Vaenuku, an incoming freshman defensive tackle at UOU and Andrew Uhatafe, 13 were killed in a rollover accident near Cuba, N.M. Traveling with them were Salesi Uhatafe, another incoming freshman lineman at UOU and his father Salesi Sr.

"Everyone who knew Gaius is heartbroken today," Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham said Tuesday. "He was the kind of young man who lit up a room and his future in football and life had no boundaries. Words cannot express our devastation over the loss of Gaius."

The football players were all graduates of Trinity High School in Euless, Texas and were apparently driving from Utah to Texas. At about 7:30 a.m., Manukainiu posted a tweet stating the group was getting ready to make the 22-hour trip and had not had any sleep.

"We lost a terrific young man," TAMU coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement. "Polo was loved by his teammates and coaches. Anyone who came in contact with him was struck by his sense of humor and smile. My heart aches for his mom and family members."

New Mexico State Police responded to a single car accident in which a white Toyota Sequoia SUV rolled over just before 9 p.m. on U.S. 550.

Police said alcohol was not involved, but the accident was due to an overcorrection that resulted in the car rolling over several times. The driver was the only one wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead on an ambulance en route to the hospital. Both Manukainiu and Uhatafe were thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene.

Johnny Manziel, last year's Heisman Trophy winner and teammate to Manukainiu, tweeted his condolences Tuesday.

Former Atlanta Falcons and Utah running back Jamal Anderson also took to Twitter to offer his thoughts and prayers.

"Terrible news. Heartbreaking car accident. My prayers are with the families of Gaius Vaenuku [sic.], Manukainiu Polo, & their young cousins. So sad."
