2016 Rio Olympics Results: Team USA's Anthony Ervin Wins Gold; Michael Phelps Loses To Joseph Schooling
ByRecent 2016 Rio Olympics results revealed that Team USA's Anthony Ervin has won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle event. Michael Phelps, on the other hand, settled for silver in the men's 100m butterfly final.
The Associated Press reported that Anthony Ervin nabbed the gold medal from Florent Manaudou of France and fellow American Nathan Adrian. Manaudou claimed silver while Adrian got the bronze medal.
Another Team USA swimmer, Katie Ledecky broke the world record in the 800m freestyle event. This is her fourth gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
She joined Debbie Meyer as the only women who were able to sweep the three longer freestyle events at the same Olympics. Meyer broke records in the 1968 Mexico Games.
Meanwhile, in a surprising turn of events, Michael Phelps has been beaten by Singapore's Joseph Schooling in the 100m butterfly event. According to CNN, Schooling, who scored a record time of 50.83 seconds, is the first Singaporean athlete to win a Games gold.
Phelps was able to finish in a three-way tie for the silver medal with South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh. They all clocked the same time at 51.14 seconds.
This is the 27th medal for the American swimmer. Michael Phelps still has the chance to win gold in Saturday's men's 4x100m freestyle medley.
Phelps' silver place came after he was able to win his 22nd gold medal on Thursday at the 200m individual medley event. Japan's Kosuke Hagino got the silver medal after he came up short by nearly a body-length from Phelps. China's Wang Shun got bronze. Fellow American Ryan Lochte finished fifth.
"Right now, I don't know how to wrap my head around that," he said at the time. "I don't know that to say. It's been a hell of a career."
Fellow Team USA Ryan Murphy took home the gold in the men's 200m backstroke event with a time of one minute and 53.62 seconds. This comes after he won the 100m backstroke on Monday.
