Brazilian rugby player Isadora Cerullo was proposed to by her girlfriend Marjorie Enya after Australia won the first women's rugby sevens event in Olympic history.

Marjorie Enya, 28, entered the pitch and asked her partner of two years, Isadora Cerullo to marry her in a stirring speech on the pitch that met with a round of applause. This was right after the medal ceremony of the inaugural rugby competition.

Photographers and television cameras captured the emotional movement that Ms Enya, a manager at the Deodoro stadium in Rio (where the competition was actually played), took the microphone to pop the question to her heartthrob on the pitch, The Indian Express reported.

Ms Cerullo, 25, is a member of the Brazil team that finished ninth in the tournament after failing to beat the Japanese squad. She grew up in the United States and hold dual Brazil-US citizenship.An emotional Ms Cerullo accepted and, with no ring, Ms Enya tied a ribbon to her partner's finger.

Although the Olympic Games looked like the end for her, Ms Enya told the BBC that it's actually starting of a new life with her fiance for two years. The couple moved to Sao Paulo to concentrate on making Brazil's team for the Rio Games. Ms Cerullo was reportedly studying medicine in the U.S. prior to getting selected for Brazil's Olympic squad. Brazil beat Japan 33-5, finishing in ninth place overall in the 12-team women's draw.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in Brazil on May 16, 2013.

In other news, a dramatic day one of men's sevens in Rio finished off with New Zealand and Australia both failing to win their opening games.

Although the women's tournament went to script, things didn't go quite well for the men as seven's erratic nature was unleashed.

France defeated Australia 31-14 in their pool B opener before recouping to see-off Spain (26-12) in game two, Fox Sport reported.

Australia is slated to square off against the unbeaten South Africa in the final group game at 12.30am Thursday AEST.

This is not compulsorily a must-win game for the Aussies.
