Channing Tatum would play the role of a mermaid in a remake of the 1984 film, "Splash".

The star of "Magic Mike", Channing Tatum will take the role previously played by Darryl Hannah which is a mermaid in the film "Splash". He will appear in the film with Jillian Bell who will be playing the role previously played by Tom Hanks, THR reported.

Both of them starred together in the comedy film about undercover cops in 2014, "22 Jump Street". The film topped the box office list upon its launch.

"Splash" will have the same producer as with the original film, Ron Howard from Imagine Entertainment. Channing Tatum would also act as producer in the film. This new version will be written by Marja Lewis-Ryan. The original rom-com film was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay, BBC reported.

Marja Lewis-Ryan was also the writer of HBO's "Unsupervised" and "Lean In"

"Splash" is a fantasy romantic comedy by Walt Disney Studios.

The original version of "Splash" features a young boy who was saved by a mermaid from drowning who, as a grown up, was played by Tom Hanks. The mermaid, Hannah, returned 20 years later giving the boy that she once saved an option to live on land or leave the dry land and live underwater with her. It was rated PG because of brief scenes of nudity and profanity.

The remake will exchange the genders of the main characters making the mermaid a merman which would be played by Channing Tatum and the boy will be played by Jillian Bell.

Recently, Channing Tatum starred in "Hail Caesar" with Josh Brolin and George Clooney. Bell, on the other hand, will appear in the "Office Christmas Party" and "Fist Fight" which will be released later this year.

"Splash" will also have Anna Culp as executive producer.
