The Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) already had its first road test in Qinhuangdao City, and the run also consisted of a brake and power consumption test.
The TEB is powered by electricity, the vehicle is about 72 feet long and 25 feet wide and can carry 300 passengers, but the future model of the Transit Elevated Bus could probably be coupled together to carry even more. The width of the vehicle can span multiple lanes of traffic, according to China Xinhua News.
When the Transit Elevated Bus is actually operational, the vehicle should hit max speeds of around 40 miles per hour, making it a reasonable mode of public transportation, Tech Crunch reported.
The objective of the Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) is to make traffic less serious. The passenger compartment of the TEB rises far above other vehicles on the road, allowing cars to pass underneath.
While this Transit Elevated Bus still isn't ready for mainstream daily use, it's pretty amazing to see how the Chinese actually turn this vehicle into a reality. And China's bizarre vehicle has already attracted interest from governments in India, Indonesia, France, and Brazil.
However, the unorthodox vehicle was first unveiled in 2010, and then again during Beijing's 19th International High-Tech Expo last May. Song Youzhou, the chief engineer of the Transit Elevated Bus, stated that prototypes of the bus are being constructed. And five cities (Zhoukou, Nanyang, Tianjin, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao) have signed contracts with Youzhou's TEB Technology Development Company for pilot projects, according to The Verge.
But, a number of questions were fired upon the feasibility of the straddling bus, and the questions were focused on how the bus won't cause a large number of traffic deaths. And as the prototype that was launched in Qinhuangdao, it will hopefully help response to some of those concerns.
