Simi Teacher Arrested: Malia Brooks Held at $2 Million Bail for Sex Crimes Against a Sixth Grader
ByA California elementary school teacher faces charges of having a sexual relationship with a child under the age of 14, ABC 7 reported.
Malia Brooks, of Simi Valley, faces multiple sex crimes involving one sixth grade student from Garden Grove Elementary School over a period of time. Simi Valley police did not disclose when and where the crimes took place.
CBS Los Angeles reported that sexual relationship began in late 2012 and lasted four months.
Simi Valley Police Lt. did not confirm the report and said the confidentiality is in the victim's best interest and his family and to protect the integrity of the investigation.
The 32-year-old teacher and mother made her first appearance in court on Wednesday to be arraigned. She was supposedly attempting to leave the state and her bail was set at two million dollars.
She pleaded not guilty to all charges due to mental illness, attorney, Ron Bamieh, said.
"We had her diagnosed and she's in treatment," Bamieh told NBC Los Angeles. "My guess is that a lot of the charges precipitated from that illness."
Brooks was placed on administrative leave in February after the initial reports of sexual misconduct began to swirl. She resigned last week and turned herself in for arrest.
Parents reluctantly brought their kids to the school's sixth grade graduation ceremony and tried keeping their spirits light.
"I was debating on whether to bring them today, but it is the last day," parent Shelley Brewer told ABC 7. "They're going to try to make it fun."
Brooks had been an elementary school teacher at Garden Grove since 2004 and was described by many as a great teacher.
Superintendent for the school district Kathy Scroggin said in a statement that Brooks had "been evaluated until now as an exemplary teacher" and ensured to parents that "the district has taken every precaution to ensure the safety of students."
