Michael J. Creed, a 25-year-old resident of Dixie Line Road, Newark, has been arrested and charged with first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon after he stabbed and injured a Blue Hen senior quarterback of the University of Delaware football team.
Creed is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Center in Wilmington with a bail set at $60,000. He will continue to stay there pending a grand jury indictment.
Police officers said that 22-year-old 5th year senior Trevor Sasek suffered three stab wounds in the chest and abdomen, following an argument May 12, in a Newark parking lot behind the Main Street Galleria at 54 E. Delaware Ave.
Creed fled the scene immediately and Sasek was taken to a local hospital before police arrived.
He was arrested later after police identified Creed as the main suspect through a surveillance video that allegedly showed him screaming at a group that included Sasek.
According to witnesses, a group of friends including Sasek were walking toward their vehicle when Creed began shouting at them. Sasek then went up to Creed and caught hold of his shoulder. Creed turned around and stabbed Sasek and then rushed toward East Main Street laughing. Moments later, Sasek discovered he had been stabbed - once in the right armpit and twice in the abdomen, resulting in a perforated bowel, which necessitated surgery.
Currently, he is reported to be in a stable condition.
Sasek, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound, has played in 13 games over the last three seasons with three starts. This year, Sasek, of Limerick, Pa., is one of three players competing for a starting position at Delaware.
"University of Delaware officials have been in contact with the injured student and his family, and we wish him a speedy recovery. We have a proactive approach in place and work closely with partner agencies. We continue to use our resources and tools to keep the community safe," School spokesman John Brennan said.
