University of California-Irvine (UCI) comprising of 2.6 percent African Americans has reported a second racial episode in less than a month.
Earlier this month, police alleged that an unknown individual slipped a note in one of the African-American student's bag that read, 'Go back 2 Africa slave.'
UCI police Sgt. Mark Arnold described the note as a 'hate incident.'
"If it's a criminal matter then it would go to the courts," Arnold said. "If it were an internal discipline issue the university would handle that."
Arnold said that no suspect has been identified as yet but if the police find the suspect then the university will investigate the matter and take appropriate action
Just two weeks ago, the campus was in the spot light after a fraternity's black-faced video surfaced. The music video featured a male member of the Asian fraternity Lambda Theta Delta sporting a black face. Several associations like the Black Student Union members, the Asian Pacific Student Association and the black community termed it as an example of racial insensitivity that they claim is quite common at UCI.
"To say whether these two things are connected is not something I'm prepared to do," UCI spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon, said.
The fraternity regrets the incident and has even proposed to suspend itself. A disciplinary investigation has already been initiated to look into this incident.
Since the video surfaced, additional racial sensitivity programs have been introduced. And the university continues to offer its standard diversity training and programs.
"We have ongoing programs that are designed to teach students to value each other's cultures and differences," Lawhon said. "We're certainly continuing those."
