Sources at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU) told the Denver Post that Mike Bohn, who resigned as Athletic Director Tuesday, was forced out.

In a letter Bohn sent to his former colleagues in the athletic department, he seems to be stunned by the decision even though, on paper at least, he is the one making it. Bohn served as AD for eight years and had just received a five-year contract extension in 2011.

ABC affiliate 7News reported Wednesday that CU will pay Bohn $918,000 as part of a resignation agreement that will also include eight season tickets to football, men's and women's basketball games for the rest of his life.

Also in his agreement was a clause that included Bohn must do his best to voluntarily appear in court for any lawsuit, proceeding or hearing relating to his tenure in which he may be called as a witness.

In his letter, Bohn tried to nip any allegations, rumors or suspicion of wrongdoing in the bud.

"I want to ensure you know, as my official separation agreement states, that I have not engaged in any impropriety, NCAA rule violations, university policy violation or any immoral, dishonest, or other sort of misconduct," he wrote.

Bohn said in his letter that his resignation would be effective immediately and that it was best "given the circumstances."

"They want to go in a different direction and that is their prerogative," he wrote. "This is a very disappointing, troubling and shocking development as we have made so much progress together over the past 8 years."

Phil DiStefano, CU-Boulder Chancellor, accepted Bohn's resignation Tuesday, but did not comment on the reason behind it.

"Mike Bohn led CU-Boulder athletics in a time of great transition and change," DiStefano told 7News. "We are grateful to him for his vision, passion and commitment, and for his key role in revitalizing men's and women's basketball, helping us to join the Pac-12 Conference, and in taking important steps to upgrade athletic facilities at CU-Boulder. We wish him well."

DiStefano announced associate athletic director Ceal Barry would take over as interim athletic director until a successor is hired.
