At its 245th commencement ceremony, Brown University honored Ben Affleck and five others with an honorary doctorate, according to a press release on the school's website.
Affleck received a Doctor of Fine Arts for his writing, directing and acting work. He was among five others who the release referred to as "distinguished artists, writers, scientists and educators."
Author and MIT Professor Junot Diaz, retired Stanford University bacteriologist Stanley Falkow, Tougaloo College President Beverly Wade Hogan medical doctor and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation President Risa Lavizzo-Mourey and Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padron were also honored with honorary doctorates.
When Affleck went to receive his degree, the crowd of graduated prodded him to address the crowd with a "speech" chant, reported the Providence Journal.
"This is a spectacular honor for me," said the Boston native while also stating he had never received a college degree before this one. "Not only for the education, but now I surpass Matt Damon."
Affleck's latest film "Argo" won the Academy Award for Best Picture earlier this year at the Oscar's.
After the ceremony Affleck told AceShowbiz.com that his next project would require him to work from home while his wife, Jennifer Garner, will work on some films she has in the making.
"[Jennifer's] got a couple of movies coming up, so it's going to be a little Mr. Mom action, and I'm going to get back in the ring and we're going to see if I still have it," he said.
While Affleck received the big honor, he also made a doctor of medicine graduate's day reported the Boston Herald.
Eve Gail Hoffman was invited to speak on behalf of her fellow doctor of medicine degree candidates. After shaking hands with Brown President Christina Paxton, she went in for a hug from Affleck.
"I figured, I'm getting my degree today and becoming a doctor today, and adding a little icing on the cake would be hugging Ben Affleck," Hoffman told the Boston Herald.
Hoffman, who had planned the move for weeks, said she was not nervous about doing it, only that someone else would do it first. When she finally made her move and asked the actor, he replied "of course, babe."
Hoffman told the Providence Journal that becoming a doctor and hugging Ben Affleck "combined makes it the best day of my life."
