Sierra Nevada College (SNC) has introduced lacrosse programs for the 2013-2014 season and has hired Bruce Meierdiercks and Nora Fallon-Oben as head coaches for the men's and women's teams, respectively.

Starting spring 2014, the college's first lacrosse team will compete in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League. The men's team will compete in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) while the women's team will compete in the Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (WCLA).

"We hope that by offering more team sports we will attract more students who want to go to school at SNC while still staying involved with athletics. Lacrosse makes sense, since it is one of the fastest growing sports on the West Coast," said Executive Vice President and Provost, Shannon Beets.

Lacrosse, also known as the 'The Creator's Game,' was created by Native Americans who played with wood, deerskin or baked clay balls on courts one to 15 miles long, to resolve conflicts, cure the sick and for body building. Apart from the U.S., the sport is also played by the French and the Canadians.

Several current SNC students expressed their interest to be a part of this sport.

Sophomore Mitch Cotich said, "It would be cool to have another organized sport that's not snow related. I'd definitely be down. I just shipped my stick out here today."

Other than Sierra Nevada, Wartburg College and Johnson State College have added a lacrosse programs this year.
