Assistant professor Jennifer Yucus from Midwestern State University (MSU) is being investigated for allegedly forcing her students to create anti-gun posters in a graphic design class.
The professor asked the students to make the anti-gun posters for her personal gun control campaign against pro-gun legislation that is currently pending before the Texas state legislature.
The posters were used to advertise her anti-gun petition 'MSU is Anti-Concealed Carry on Campus.' The signboards were also hung in the hallways of the college.
The graphic design students found the assignment strange and subsequently complained to the university officials early last month.
An excerpt of the student complaint:
"Several of my classmates were uncomfortable with the assignment and either quietly or openly expressed this. Professor Yucus asked students to rationalize objections by thinking of it as a job from an employer [or words to that effect].
"Professor Yucus took photos of her students in the process of drafting and creating the posters, but did not say how these would be used."
During the process of making the posters, Yucus asked the students to insert the URL of the petition she had created and photographed students while creating the posters to give the false impression of youth support.
Betty Stewart, university provost and vice president for academic affairs said , "It is a serious offense. My first step is to speak with student directly after reading the report that I received. Then I will speak with the professor."
