Middle Georgia State College Campus police, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Patrol have launched a search for 19-year-old college freshmen Jmaal Malik Keyes, who has been missing from campus for close to two weeks.
College officials were alerted by Keyes' mother on April 29 after he stopped answering his cellphone.
Keyes' mother was the last family member to have spoken to him, April 24. He hasn't made a call to any of his family members nor to his friends since his disappearance.
"It's completely out of character, which is why we're all confused as to what's going on. We didn't see this coming at all," she said.
Campus police allege that surveillance video shows Keyes getting into another student's car wearing a yellow and white shirt, black jeans and black and white shoes. The student told the officials that he dropped Keyes in a neighborhood near the campus.
Others claim that he was also last seen at a local Flash Foods gas station.
Campus Police Chief Shawn said that the store remembers Keyes as he was their regular customer. But they are unable to tell the police officials whether that was the day they last saw him or the day before.
Keyes is described to be 5 feet 6 inches tall and 220 to 240 pounds with low-cut hair.
"We have had students go missing this time of year because it's finals and they sometimes move off-campus ... and hole up to study," Douglas said. "But we're going on two weeks. I'm going to say that's a little unusual."
Police have been unable to trace Keyes' cellphone, which has been out of service since April 25. His cell phone goes directly to voicemail.
Douglas claims that the last text came from a friend asking for lunch after scanning through phone records.
He also said that Keyes has never suffered from any sort of mental illness or instability and has no history of drug, alcohol or behavioral problems.
In addition, everything is intact in his dorm room and nothing has been reported missing.
Police officials are not suspecting any foul play.
Anyone who has any information regarding the disappearance of Keyes is asked to contact the Cochran office of the Middle Georgia State College Police Department at (478) 934-3002.
