The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has sanctioned Lincoln University's proposal to establish a campus in Coatesville city.

The university will start offering courses in business, beginning this fall, at the Gordon Education Center at 351 Kersey St. The courses will be taught during the evenings hours and weekends for the time being.

As the enrolment increases in this campus, classes will be offered during the day and more accelerated undergraduate and graduate degree programs will be introduced in accounting, finance, information technology, economics and management fields.

"Once again, Lincoln University claims another first with its expansion to the city of Coatesville," said Robert R. Jennings, university president. "Lincoln University-Coatesville will offer a great and convenient opportunity for (a) working adult, veteran or other student who has already obtained an associate's or bachelor's degree in business and wishes to further his or her professional career with an advanced degree."

Lincoln University, established in 1854, is considered to be the country's first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Currently, the university grants admission to approximately 2,500 students. Its notable alumni include Thurgood Marshall- the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice; Lillian Fishburne - the first African American woman posted as Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy; Langston Hughes- a prominent poet; Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana and Nnamdi Azikiwe- the first President of Nigeria among others.

This Pennsylvanian university was initially operated as a private institution, but since 1972 it is recognised as a public institute.

Former president Dr. Horace Mann Bond has mentioned in his book, 'Education for Freedom: A History of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania,' that Lincoln is the premier university to offer higher education in the arts and sciences for youth of African origin.
