Campus Crest Communities Inc., the Charlotte-based Student housing developer, plans to construct a 216-unit, 584-bed student apartment complex on a 30-acre of land it purchased from Greensboro College last month.

The housing complex will primarily serve UNC-Greensboro students, and the building will provide easy access to the university, city amenities.

Campus Crest bought the former J.C. Price School site, a 29.5-acre property and an adjacent land, for $3.75 million from Greensboro College.

"The neighborhood is relatively quiet now, and I'd like it to stay that way. And if the plans involve tearing down J.C. Price, the whole neighborhood would fight. It's the last historical piece of Warnersville," said Margaret Pinnix, a resident who wishes that the school be used to teach local children.

The J.C. Price School, established in 1922, taught black students until all Greensboro's public schools were merged in 1971. It ultimately closed down in 1983.

Campus Crest said that this project, "The Grove at Greensboro," is being developed in collaboration with Harrison Street Real Estate Capital along with another new student housing complex near the University of Louisville.

The 584-bed project is reported to be smaller than "Grove at Louisville," which is planned for 654 beds.

Both the projects have a completion date of 2014-2015 academic year and together will cost around $65.6 million.

For the past several years, the college has been planning to sell the land after facing fiscal troubles that threatened its accreditation.

It purchased J.C. Price School from the Guilford Technical Community College in 2004 as a site for a new football stadium but the plan was later abandoned for financial reasons.

The Salvation Army also expressed an interest in the land last year to develop a Boys & Girls Club.
