Rhode Island Department of Health authorities have confirmed Thursday that the body recovered from the Providence River on Tuesday, is that of Brown University student Sunil Tripathi.
Tripathi was reported missing since mid-March.
Dara Chadwick, a spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Health, told NBC that the cause of his death is yet to be determined. But no foul play is suspected.
Chadwick said that a forensic dental examination helped confirm the identity of the 22-year-old's body, indicating a long immersion.
Upon hearing the news, Tripathi's family posted this message on theFacebook page, created to find their son.
On April 23, our beloved Sunil was discovered in the waters off India Point Park in Providence, Rhode Island.
As we carry indescribable grief, we also feel incredible gratitude. To each one of you-from our hometown to many distant lands-we extend our thanks for the words of encouragement, for your thoughts, for your hands, for your prayers, and for the love you have so generously shared.
Your compassionate spirit is felt by Sunil and by all of us.
This last month has changed our lives forever, and we hope it will change yours too. Take care of one another. Be gentle, be compassionate. Be open to letting someone in when it is you who is faltering. Lend your hand. We need it. The world needs it.
With love,
The Tripathi Family
Tripathi was reported to be suffering from depression just before disappearing.
In addition, he left his apartment without carrying his ID, credit cards, wallet or cell phone. Sangeeta Tripathi, Sunil's sister, said that it was unlike him to disappear without contacting anyone.
Tripathi, a philosophy major and musician, was in the news last week, when Reddit and Twitter misidentified him as one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
On Monday, Reddit general manager Erik Martin, apologized for reporting a resemblance between the alleged suspect and Tripathi that instigated widespread speculation. "The Reddit staff and the millions of people on Reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened," Martin told abc."We all need to look at what happened and make sure that in the future we do everything we can to help and not hinder crisis situations."
Tripathi was last seen in the campus late night wearing blue jeans, a black Eastern Mountain Sports ski jacket, glasses and a Philadelphia Eagles wool hat on March 16. He was last spotted alive in a surveillance video, walking near his apartment by the Ivy League campus.
He was on an approved leave vacation from the university, at the time.
