Notre Dame Extends Contract with NBC Sports Group to 2025
ByThe University of Notre Dame and Comcast Corp's. (CMCSA) NBC Sports Group have extended their football contract another 10 years, starting 2016 through 2025, bringing their overall landmark partnership to 35 years, which began in 1991.
The current deal is set to expire in 2015. Previously, both the groups were involved in four consecutive five-year agreements.
The financial terms of the extension contract were not disclosed but it is reportedly around $15 million annually
As per the extension, the NBC Sports Group will retain global media rights on all platforms to broadcast a minimum of seven Notre Dame home football games per year and occasional games to air on NBC Sports Network available to 80 million homes.
And NBC Sports Digital will continue to provide live coverage of Fighting Irish home games for the web, mobile and tablets, which it started offering since 2009.
"Specifically, the evolution of the NBC Sports Network has provided opportunities for special programming featuring inside looks at our football team and several other Notre Dame sports programs the hockey program and lacrosse as well and in-depth profiles on the unsung heroes of Notre Dame athletics," Notre Dame vice president and athletics director, Jack Swarbrick, said.
Fighting Irish had one of their most successful seasons in more than a decade as they finished 2012 regular season undefeated 12-0.
As a result, the television ratings for NBC Sports Group also peaked to the maximum during the season since 2005 and 2006 with approximately 4.4 million viewers and a 2.8 household rating for its seven home games - a 69 percent increase from the previous season due to the team's performance at the BCS Championship.
NBC will relay seven Notre Dame games this year: Temple (Aug. 31), Michigan State (Sept. 21), Oklahoma (Sept. 28), Arizona State (in Arlington, Texas; Oct. 5), USC (Oct. 19), Navy (Nov. 2) and BYU (Nov. 23)
Revenues from the NBC contract have helped Notre Dame financially including funding for undergraduate scholarship endowment, doctoral fellowships at Graduate School and MBA scholarships at Mendoza College of Business.
This has benefited 6,300 Notre Dame undergraduate students who have received nearly $80 million in financial aid from the revenue generated through the NBC contract.
Apart from broadcasting games, NBC also telecasts two-minute halftime messages featuring university faculty and student research.
