University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) police have initiated an investigation to hunt down the culprit responsible for detailing Kristopher Sharp's confidential medical records on flyers and circulating them around campus.

Sharp, who has been open about his homosexuality and is running for the student body vice-president post at UHD, was the victim of this smear campaign early this month.

The flyer's front page featured Sharp's photo with long hair, bow tie and giant X drawn across the photo; headlined 'WANT AIDS?', and 'DON'T SUPPORT ISSAC AND KRIS, HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA,' while the other side revealed his medical condition as an HIV-positive student and prescribed medications from a physician's visit.

It asked the students to vote for Sharp and his running mate Isaac Valdez, if they wished to get infected with AIDS.

"I've never seen anything like this -- this is the very first time anything like this has occurred [on campus]," said Sharp. "There's a culture at UHD that is somewhat less accepting of LGBT youth, but something of this magnitude is completely mind-blowing. I knew, going into the election that I could possibly be targeted because of my sexuality -- but I had no idea that it would go to this level."

Sharp, a third-year social work major, initially considered a transfer to another college but later decided to continue at UHD and resume his campaign.

Valdez was also equally shocked and speechless about this act. The university acted quickly and got rid of the flyers.

Sharp is 95 percent sure that someone from the student body committed this crime or someone who had access to his medical folder.

Campus university police officials allege that the flyer used proper words such as 'AIDS' and ' Homosexual' instead of offensive words, and therefore protected under the First Amendment and cannot be considered as hate speech.

However, involuntary public disclosure of an individual's medical status without permission comes under criminal statues in the Texas Criminal Code.

Even if the university finds out the perpetrator, Sharp is not planning to take any legal action against the individual or group of students. He is just going to patiently wait for an apology from the concerned group.
