Dereon Tayronne Kelley, 22, was convicted Wednesday for issuing false bomb threats to the Texas State University, San Marcos, on Oct.18.
Kelley is charged with three counts of using the Internet and cell phone to hack into his former girlfriend's Yahoo email account in order to send three separate emails threatening to blow up the admissions office at Texas State using an explosive device.
In addition, he is also charged with making a similar bomb threat to a campus department at Texas A&M University, Oct.19, which resulted in the evacuation of the College Station campus.
The sentencing is scheduled in May. He faces up to a maximum of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
Earlier, Kelly's former girlfriend, Brittany Henderson, 19, was arrested as a possible suspect in the threat made against Texas State. Henderson was arrested for sending hoax bomb threat calls- a third-degree felony and creating a false alarm or report, a Class A misdemeanor.
Two days after her arrest, the policemen took her ex-boyfriend into custody following an investigation that revealed his access to Henderson's email account. Despite her ex-boyfriends' arrest, she had to spend a month in jail before being released in December with a reduced bond.
Last Month, the Hays County district attorney's office dropped charges against Henderson.
Hays County assistant district attorney, Fred Weber, told the Statesman that there wasn't sufficient evidence to proceed with the case against Henderson.
"We take all bomb threats very seriously, especially those that involve academic institutions, and we will prosecute those that commit such acts to the fullest extent of the law," U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said.
