Georgia Juvenile Corrections Officer Arrested by Savannah University Police on Drug Charges
BySavannah State University police arrested Kevin Biggins, an off-duty juvenile corrections officer, on felony drug charges, Friday.
Biggins, 31, is enrolled as a student at the university. He was in a student dorm room on campus when he was taken into custody by the police.
He was arrested after police found him concealing a plastic bag containing two prescription bottles and 13 small bags filled with marijuana in his clothing.
Before his arrest, Biggins was working as a juvenile corrections officer at the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center.
The university police also discovered an unmarked prescription bottle containing an illegal stash of oxycodone along with a handgun in a drawer in the room.
As a result, he is charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm on school property.
Avery D. Niles, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Internal Affairs (DJJ) said that his department would immediately call for his suspension from all duties at the center.
He said that there was no immediate evidence to prove Biggins may have kept illegal goods in the state detention facility where he worked. Niles ordered an immediate investigation to check all contraband incidents reported at the center for any possible connection with Biggins.
