Aidan Folan, 21, a former St. Francis College student was arrested April 4 by the New York City police for brutally mugging a 55-year-old woman in a subway. The police identified Folan, after one of his fraternity brothers spotted his sweatshirt on surveillance cameras.
He has been charged with robbery and assault in the second degree.
The assault took place on March 9 at the 18th Avenue F station in Brooklyn and left the victim, Dina Perez, with a swollen face, bruises on her body and a broken wrist.
Apparently, Folan fled the scene with an envelope containing a small amount of cash.
The surveillance camera shows Perez walking down the stairs of the 18th Avenue subway station when a man suddenly attacks and beats her. He is also seen rifling through her purse.
Police said the suspect in the video was wearing a black sweatshirt with "Stugotz" and the number 27 on the back and Alpha Phi Delta, the name of his fraternity, on the front.
When the video was released to the public, one of his fraternity brothers immediately identified him as Folan and called the police and gave all the required information including his Bay Ridge address.
"The alleged actions that Mr. Folan is being charged with are heinous and completely repugnant to the membership and tradition of Alpha Phi Delta fraternity," the fraternity brother who called the cops, said. "Being human beings, we felt compelled to do that. If he's found guilty, we will immediately expel him."
He also said that the whole fraternity is ashamed of the fact that Folan belongs to their brotherhood.
The member claims that Folan received the hoodie during the one year he spent at St. Francis in Brooklyn Heights.
He is reportedly wearing a similar sweatshirt on one of his Facebook profile images.
The fraternity received hundreds of angry e-mails from some of its members across the country.
