Charlotte Butler, 80, a native of Naugatuck, Conn., has recently enrolled herself in the Post University Online Education Institute to pursue bachelor's degree in human services.
Butler has two sons, who are 60 and 59-years-old respectively. And is a foster mother to several children including her 19-year-old adopted son.
She is the oldest student ever to enrol at the 123-year-old Waterbury University, serving as a role model and inspiration to many students, faculty, staff, working professionals and older generation.
Butler, who never previously attended college, said studying for a degree at this point of life will not only motivate her children, but will help her stay fit and sharp.
She is a 1950 graduate of Fairfield High school.
"A smarter America is a stronger America, and people today are not using their brains enough," Butler said. "I want to stay active both physically and mentally and age is no obstacle."
Tom Samph, President and CEO of Post University said that Charlotte is a true champion, who reiterates the fact that a person can complete his/her education at any stage of their life.
Samph said that her experience in varied aspects of life will add diversity and enliven the discussions in every class she attends.
Butler classes stretch for a period of eight weeks.
Post University started offering accelerated degrees since 1976 to help Vietnam veterans get the opportunity to attend college.
Later, they started introducing on-site education at companies like Cigna, Johnson & Johnson, Pratt & Whitney and The Hartford to help working professionals complete their higher education.
And in 1996, Post began offering online accelerated degree programs over the internet.
