For the first time in its 209-year history, Ohio University has received more than 20,000 admission applications.

The applications are 3,000 more in number compared to last year and 7,000 ahead of 2011.

Craig Cornell, vice provost for enrolment management, said that the university has collected 20,512 applications as of mid March.

Cornell said that, in-state, out-state and international students' applications are seeing a tremendous growth. He attributes the success to the university's extensive marketing strategy, which has helped them gain better exposure nationwide and internationally.

Last year, the university saw a spurt in the number of applications for programs in business, engineering, education and health sciences.

However, this year, departments across the university are witnessing an increase in demand for courses including arts and sciences.

However, the university will enrol only 4,025 students for the next freshman class. Currently, the freshman class comprises of 3,900 students.

Overall, the university has around 17,000 undergraduate students on the main campus.

Ohio University, founded in 1804, is a public research university located on a 1,850-acre campus. It was the first university established in the state and Northwest Territory, and is the ninth oldest public university in the U.S.

Along with five regional campuses, the university comprises of a total of 35,000 students. It offers more than 250 undergraduate, masters, Ph.D. and doctoral degrees in selected departments

Ohio's athletic teams are known as Bobcats, who compete in the Mid-American Conference in all sports.
