Lakeland College will add women's bowling as its 19th varsity sport starting with the 2013-14 academic year. This is the second varsity sport added by the college in just four months.

Last November, the college upgraded its club men's volleyball program to varsity status.

Apart from Lakeland College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater also offers women's bowling as a varsity sport in the state.

All colleges and universities take part in the women's bowling matches during the winter sports season at the collegiate level. And together with schools from divisions I, II and III, the bowling teams fight for the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship.

"As Lakeland College continues to grow, we continue to identify and develop opportunities for students," vice president of Athletics and Wellness, Kellen Winslow, said. "We feel that bowling is a natural fit for our athletic department. As we've seen the sport grow at the high school level, we've identified this as a good fit for Lakeland."

Casey Carr, who is the men's and women's head tennis coach, has been appointed as the leading coach of the women's bowling team. The recruiting process has already been initiated for the 2013-2014 season.

Carr told the newspaper that the team will hopefully comprise of a lot of great local talent, as Sheboygan County is known for producing outstanding bowlers for decades.

The Odyssey Fun Center bowling facility will serve as the practice site for the college's women's bowling team.
