Melita Jaric, 43, a Florida International University (FIU) student died Monday from her injuries after spending four days in a coma. She was struck by a hit-and-run driver. She was pursuing her doctorate degree in computer science at FIU.
The incident occurred Friday when Jaric was walking across Southwest 11th Street west of LeJeune Road from her home to her car to run an errand. The driver of the car did not stop and fled the area, without rendering aid.
Jaric was then taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she remained in critical condition over the weekend.
Lee Feinberg, a neighbor, told Miami Herald that referring to the street as a race track would be an understatement. The four-way stop is neglected as people think they own the street and drive that way, the neighbor added.
Miami-Dade police detectives are still looking out for clues, leads and witnesses to come forward with information about the vehicle or the driver involved in the hit- and-run incident.
Natasa Jaric, the victim's sister said that her sister would have been possibly alive if the hit-and-run driver had stayed at the scene. If someone could have picked her up or taken to the hospital, the damage would have been a lot less.
Police spokesman Detective Javier Baez, told msn that leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid or providing information is a crime.
Later, the university's President Mark B. Rosenberg issued a statement saying:
"Melita Juric was a bright doctoral student with a promising future that was cut short by this senseless tragedy. She was driven, dedicated and curious about the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time."
