The governing boards of various private colleges in eastern Iowa like Coe College, Mount Mercy University and Cornell College have decided to increase tuition and fee ranging from 3 percent to 5.5 percent for 2013-14 academic year.

Students attending Coe College will experience a hike of less than 4 percent in their tuition, room and board and student fees. As a result, the total cost of next year's tuition is $43,590, when compared to $41,920 this year and the base tuition will increase to $35,400 from $33,900 this year.

On the other hand, Cornell College officials have increased their comprehensive tuition and fees to the maximum of 5.5 percent. For the academic year 2013-14, students will have to pay $36,205 for tuition, $8,500 for room and board and $225 for student activities, which comes up to a total of $44,930.

As Cornell officials are aware of the impact of the economic situation on students and their families, the college has allocated more than $24 million for student financial assistance for 2013-14.

Meanwhile, Mount Mercy University has increased next year's tuition and room and board fees to the minimum of 3 percent, which is touted to be the lowest cost increase in 25 years for students at Mount Mercy.

Hence, the students will have to pay around $26,160 in tuition and $8,075 for room and board.
