Around 10 students from various developing countries will be attending a five-month English language program at the English Language Institute, University of Montana, as part of their 2013 Humphrey Fellowship program.
This program will help the students increase their proficiency in English and understanding of American culture. Once the students complete this course, they will commence their fellowship program.
"It's very exciting for us," Sandra Janusch, director of the English Language Institute at UM, told Missoulian. "For a lot of them, it will be their first experience in the U.S. Being in a smaller community will be a nice way for them to transition into the program."
This year students from Colombia, Brazil, Haiti, China, Vietnam and Romania, among other countries, will be sharpening their English language at UM.
Janusch said that the English program comprises of six levels of classes, students will be assigned to a class based on their level of proficiency.
The UM is one of the two universities chosen by the U.S. to host the Department of State's Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Long-term English Language Program.
This one-year fellowship program of academic engagement and professional training is offered to mid-career professionals in leadership positions and to those who have a commitment to public service.
It also paves the way for mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding on global issues.
Janusch said that the fellowship program allows professionals to interact and learn from the U.S. leaders in business, public administration, public policy and public health and law fields.
