Belhaven University is presenting a musical, 'The Drunkard,' by the theatre department from Feb.21 to March 2 at the Belhaven Blackbox Theatre on the hazards of alcohol.

This play is based on the 19th century classic melodrama by W.H.S. Smith. The music and lyrics are by Barry Manilow and the play is directed by Stewart Hawley, assistant professor of Musical Theatre

This musical revolves around the story of the virtuous Mary, the deceitful lawyer Mr Cribbs and the new landlord, Edward's remarkable journey from the clutches of drunkenness.

Hawley said that the play is a classic redemption play and shows how a life can be redeemed and turned around with belief in God. He added that the show would give a chance to his students to be part of musicals and older plays.

"We're excited about this show because we get to jump back in time a bit and explore the world of vaudeville style performance, the broadness of melodrama and the variety of musical interludes and comedy bits all within one show," said Joseph Frost, Associate Professor of Theatre.

Admission is free for Belhaven student and faculty and for the general public the charges are $10. There is a concession for senior citizens and students.

Belhaven is a well known Christian College and offers 30 major courses in various disciplines. It has around 3,700 students registered in its various graduate and undergraduate courses.
