Anderson University's football player, Xavier Walton, collapsed during an intramural basketball game Thursday night and later passed away in hospital. .
Walton collapsed during the game at the Kardatzke Wellness Center and was later declared dead at Community Hospital Anderson. The official cause of the death has yet not been revealed.
Walton was a 245 pound 6.2 feet defence lineman on the football team and a second year visual communication and design student at the university.
Walton completed his graduation from Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, Gary.
Dr. James L. Edwards, President of Anderson University, told RTV6 abc that Xavier was a very gifted student with wide interests.
Bobby Ladner, AU head football coach, said that Xavier was a strong Christian and a wonderful teammate.
Jake Yager, a fellow teammate, told Fox 59 that he was excited about attending college as he was the first member from his family to do so.
The university's' Art and Design Department honoured Walton by displaying his most recent works at their gallery.
A makeshift memorial at Jessie C. Wilson Gallery was organised where his classmates and well wishers attended. It featured Walton's sculptures and charcoal and mixed-media work from this semester.
One side of the wall was painted white for people to leave messages, notes and drawings.
