University students from across the country have started relief efforts to help residents of Lamar and Forrest counties affected by the EF-4 tornado, Sunday.

University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Jackson State University (JSU), Mississippi State University (MSU), University of South Alabama (USA) Alcorn State University (ASU) and William Carey University (WCU) lent a hand to the relief efforts.

"Southern Miss to the Top, we're here at your disposal," Jackson State University's Student Government President Brian Wilks told Student Printz. "'For the people' was my campaign slogan, which means being there for students and community. That goes beyond JSU and Hinds County."

Wilks said that student from his university are collecting items such as toiletries and bottled water for Hattiesburg.

A group of 13 people from Mississippi State University carried chainsaws and generators and helped the officials with the relief operations at Hattiesburg, Monday.

Allison Dueitt, a second year student from MSU told the newspaper that it is really important to help each other's' schools and communities, especially after a catastrophe.

Dueitt said that Mississippi is like a family to them and their unity is required to help them fully recover from the devastation.

As part of their efforts, Dueitt said that students from his university will continue to donate necessary supplies and spread the word about fundraising.

Meanwhile, USA students have started fundraiser and blanket drive events.

Cassie Fambro, executive editor of the university's school newspaper said that students of USA have friends at USM and they are like family and it was their responsibility to support them.
