Western Michigan University has collaborated with Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) to offer advanced classes at latter's Harper Woods campus, starting May.
The agreement, which focuses on bachelor's degree in university studies, is a 'two-plus-two' arrangement, which means, when WCCCD students complete their first two years of degree program they will be transferred to WMU for the remaining years of study.
The WMU degree programs will feature both online and face-to-face courses.
In addition, the agreement also provides WMU with a space to offer classes, and to advise students enrolled in other online programs at WCCCD's Northwest campus.
"This is a way to meet the needs of even more area students, and we're delighted to collaborate with WCCCD to make our goal a reality," President John M. Dunn said.
However, the agreement needs approval from the state, the Higher Learning Commission, and WMU's faculty.
Once it is approved, online courses would begin in May, and face-to-face instruction would start in September.
Dr. Dawn Gaymer, WMU's vice provost said that through these cost-effective programs the university plans to reach out to more non-traditional students.
Gaymer feels that as a result they can earn an extra credential.
"This agreement with WCCCD will better allow us to meet the needs of nontraditional students who will be able to earn a WMU degree without leaving the area," Gaymer said. "It is a continuation of our commitment to having an expanded presence in southeast Michigan and metro Detroit."
