An engineering graduate student from the University of Maryland shot his two roommates, killing one, and then later committed suicide outside their off-campus house near the College Park campus, Tuesday morning.

Dayvon Maurice Green, 23, around 1 a.m., set a small fire in the basement of the single-family house at 8700 block, 36th Ave, College Park, Md. His roommates, aged 22, told him to put off the fire.

Green suddenly pulled out a gun from his waist band and shot one of his roommates. He survived without any life threatening injuries.

The second roommate, Stephen Alex Rane, tried to flee but was shot several times and collapsed outside the house. Sometime later, Green went to the backyard and shot himself too.

Police later found a 9mm handgun next to his body. They also found a bag of weapons with a loaded semiautomatic .22-caliber rifle (was not used in the attack), ammunition a knife and a baseball bat.

Both the guns were purchased legally

"All I heard were about six to seven shots going 'pop pop pop,' and then about 15 minutes later, we saw the cops," neighbor Jithin George told the NBC Washington.

The pavement in front of the home is still soaked with blood, where Rane was shot .

Green's family told the channel that he suffered from an unspecified mental illness for which he had been taking medication for at least a year before the shooting.

He completed his undergraduate degree at Morgan State University.

Green had been a student ambassador at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.
