Teradata University Network in alliance with Teradata, an analytic data solutions company, is offering free web-based training for technical certification to strengthen students' skills and knowledge needed for analytic data jobs.

The Teradata University Network offers two courses - Teradata Certified Professional to those who are interested in working for the IT sector and Teradata Certified Associates to those who are interested in a business role.

A report by McKinsey Global Institute revealed that the U.S. will need 1.5 million extra "data-savvy managers and analysts" by 2018 for 4 million positions in the big data world.

If we consider the current rate of U.S. graduates with deep analytical training, the country will be able to produce only 2.5million people by 2018.

Michael Goul, executive board member, Teradata University Network said that it is necessary for graduate students to be equipped with business understanding of the subject apart from the technical knowledge.

Goul said that these certification trainings help students to acquire knowledge on topics/subjects required by the industry.

Goul is the professor of Information Systems at W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University.

Students also expressed their interest in this student certification program.

"The certification process is definitely tailored to the student. You can complete the learning modules on your own time, and end of chapter reviews and interactive quizzes help make sure you are ready for the exam. I think the program was a great step in teaching me how to learn beyond a university," Rick Stinogel, student, Arizona State University said.

Bill Franks, Teradata chief analytics officer said that the certification immediately reflects an employee's base technical skills and allows the interviewer to focus on the other important skills such as business knowledge and communications abilities.

A pilot certification program was conducted last year for undergraduate and graduate students from Arizona State, Oklahoma State and University of Georgia.

Teradata University Network is a premier teaching resource for data warehousing.
