Texas A&M Football Coaching Rumors: Jake Spavital Out, Kevin Sumlin Looking to Leave?
ByAfter three seasons with the Texas A&M football program, Jake Spavital will leave College Station.
The team announced in a news release on Sunday the two sides "mutually decided to part ways." Spavital joined head coach Kevin Sumlin's staff in 2013 as a co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach before taking over as the sole OC the next season, as well as remaining the QB coach.
Billy Liucci, of TexAgs.com, called Spavital's departure the "worst-kept secret in CFP." Over the past two seasons, since Johnny Manziel left for the NFL, three Aggies quarterbacks have transferred without a clear indication why.
At this time of year, an assistant coach typically leaves his job to take at least the same one at a different program. But Spavital is walking at a time when most major Division I programs have already filled their head coaching vacancies and are finishing putting together coaching staffs.
With so much transitioning going on with his roster and now his coaching staff, it should come as no surprise if Sumlin had his feelers out for a head coaching job elsewhere.
As NFL Media's Michael Silver learned from unnamed sources, Sumlin and UCLA head football coach Jim Mora are "trying hard" to land NFL jobs.
While Sumlin is still in College Station, Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman gave the coach a public vote of confidence in an interview with SportsDay. Sumlin is under contract for four more years and $20 million. He could collect the entire sum if he was fired without cause, but a buyout would also likely be expensive.
