The official spread for the game favors Oklahoma by -1.5 points and Clemson is seeking to avenge a 40-6 drubbing in last year's Russell Athletic Bowl at the hands of Oklahoma. But playing with a chip on his shoulder is Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield's specialty.
Before leading the Sooners to the CFP and finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, Mayfield won the starting QB job at Oklahoma after walking on at a collegiate football program for the second time in three seasons.
Both teams feature balanced offensive attacks lead by lethal dual-threat QBs, so a National Championship berth may just come down to who has the ball last. Making the rematch even more enticing is that Clemson QB Deshaun Watson missed last year's bowl game with an injury while Mayfield was sitting due to his transfer.
"We know we're going to have to play our best four quarters of the year," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in his pregame press conference, according to ESPN. "That's what these games are all about. There's not a lot of margin for error, certainly when you're playing a team as hot as Oklahoma. They're probably playing the best football of anybody in the country right now."
