The National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) in collaboration with the Pennsylvania State University is setting up an Advanced International Research Center on its campus.

The center will focus on areas such as language science, science education and learning technology. Plus, it also aims to promote Chinese language learning.

The research project will track student's progress through its smart classrooms and even zero in on the percentage of people who find it easy to memorize and recognize the Chinese characters.

"There is growing interest in the U.S. in developing knowledge about Chinese culture and Chinese language teaching abilities," David Monk, dean of the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University, told Focus Taiwan.

Monk said that earlier U.S. students were not interested in learning foreign languages, but that perception is slowly changing.

The current job markets always prefer employees who are aware of global trends and have the ability to understand or converse in foreign languages.
