A sophomore of Boston University was crowned as Miss Universe 2012 Wednesday night.
Olivia Culpo, the new Miss Universe, nabbed the title beating about 88 challengers from six continents across the world. The 20-year-old beauty pageant winner also broke the jinx that kept America from a win these past 15 years.
Culpo won the crown for USA after 15 long years. Brook Lee bagged the crown for America in 1997.
Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition's opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline, reported the Assosiated Press.
While Culpo grabbed the crown, Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon finished at second and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero settled at third spot. All the contestants spent the last few weeks in Las Vegas preparing for the 61st edition of Miss Universe.
Culpo hails from Cranston, Rhode Island, and she was born as the middle child of five. Being born to two avid musician parents, she learned different instruments throughout her childhood along with her siblings. Finally she settled on the cello.
Culpo's other interests include movies, museums, concerts. Meanwhile, she also nurtures a career interest in making it big in the showbiz industry in the coming days.
Last year, Leila Lopes from Angola was crowned Miss Universe.
