The University of Michigan nabbed the top spot this year with 19 of its scholars being named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
According to reports, Ohio State University has been hanging on to the first two spots for the past decade with the highest number of its scholars getting inducted into this elite scientific society.
Meanwhile, this time around, Ohio State University is in the second spot with 18 of its faculty members being named for the AAAS.
The University of Michigan has the highest number of new fellows at 19, Ohio comes in second, followed by the University of California, Davis and Vanderbilt University, which have 17 new fellows a piece. There are 702 new fellows this year. They will be welcomed at the AAAS annual meeting in Boston in February, reported theColumbus Dispatch.
"The individuals will be recognized for their contributions to science and technology at the Fellows Forum to be held on 16 Feb 2013 during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts," a press statement of the association read. "The new Fellows will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette as a symbol of their distinguished accomplishments."
The AAAS is arguably the world's largest general scientific society and publisher. The tradition of AAAS Fellows began way back in 1874, noted the University of Michigan in a release.
Meanwhile, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by steering groups of the association's 24 sections, by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members or by the AAAS chief executive office. The organization's policymaking council votes on the final list.
