An unidentified gunman opened fire at the Morgan state university campus Friday, wounding a member of the football team.
The shooter in question was arrested by the police on campus and has been placed in custody, said media reports. The police is yet to reveal any information about the "person of interest."
The gunman triggered panic outside the Clarence W. Blount Towers and the Thurgood Marshall complex, terrifying the students as they began to run frantically to find cover after hearing some gunshots. No students sustained fatal or life-threatening injuries.
However, a student, who was later reportedly identified as a member of the college football team, suffered injuries in his leg in the shootout and is undergoing treatment in hospital.
The person involved in firing is claimed to be a non Morgan student. Meanwhile, police have also recovered a semi-automatic gun from the place where shooting occurred.
Soon after hearing the gunshots, college officials immediately sent out an emergency message through the college warning system across the premises, alerting the students to stay inside, besides informing about the shootout.
"We're an open campus, but the campus does a very good job, and our Morgan family does a great job of keeping each other safe, keeping each other informed. When you see something, you say something," said Raymond Carter, a faculty member, according to WBALTV.
The Morgan state university has witnessed a number of violent incidents on its campuses.
In September, a non Morgan student was killed in a campus shootout. The victim, Michael Antonio Campbell, was in college to visit his cousin.
Police charged a 20-year-old Northeast Baltimore resident, Kelly Lamont Ellerbee, in that shooting; he will be arraigned next month on nine charges, including attempted first- and second-degree murder, reported The Baltimore Sun.
