James Finley, the fired women's volleyball coach of Virginia Commonwealth University, has claimed that he was sacked because he was gay.
He alleged that the termination of his contract was based on his sexual orientation and had nothing to do with his performance as coach of the women's volleyball team.
Taking his speculations about his dismissal further, Finley has moved the VCU's Office for Institutional Equity against his termination.
The 52-years-old former VCU couch also reportedly threatened to take legal action, if he was not given back his job. He was fired on Nov 19, as the authorities concerned denied renewing his contract that ends on Dec. 31, 2012.
University spokeswoman Pamela D. Lepley said that a probe has been ordered into Finley's allegation, which is expected to be finished in 45 days.
The Virginia Commonwealth University Athletic Department announced that the contract of volleyball head coach James Finley will not be renewed for next season.
Finley's public allegation against losing his job, has prompted VCU director of athletics Ed McLaughlin to issue a statement on the controversy.
"I came to VCU because of how the university embraces diversity and inclusive excellence and fosters a community where differences are valued and respected. It is unfortunate that Mr. Finley feels the decision not to renew his contract was based on anything other than previously stated concerns about the volleyball program," said McLaughlin in a statement, according to ESPN.
Earlier, this month McLaughlin said that their goals called for a different leadership in accomplishing the elite task, while announcing the decision on firing of Finley.
