University Business magazine has named Southern California University of Health Sciences among the nine colleges and universities in its winter 2012 "Models of Efficiency" national recognition program.

The leading publication honors universities and colleges for their efforts and works in effectively dealing with the challenges faced by campuses in today's world. The "Models of Efficiency" program recognizes innovative approaches for streamlining higher education operations through technology and/or business process improvements.

The other colleges and universities that have been named as winter 2012 "Models of Efficiency" by Business Magazine are as follows:

Southern California University of Health Sciences, Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio); Dallas County Community College District (Texas), Pepperdine University's Graziadio School (Calif.), Northern Michigan University, NorthWest Arkansas Community College; Polk State College (Fla.), Texas A&M Health Science Center and University of West Georgia.

The winter 2012 "Models of Efficiency" national recognition program is co-sponsored by Higher One, a company that assists in college business office operations.

"Southern California University of Health Sciences' Clinical Internship Portal improves processes for SCU in multiple ways. From elimination of redundancy, conflicts and errors to better meeting accreditation requirements, the Portal is a definite business process champion for this higher education institution," said Tim Goral, editor in chief of University Business, in a statement.

Southern California University of Health Science's Clinical Internship program trains student interns on diagnosing and treating patients in a real-world health care scenario.

The university has installed Microsoft Access on its campuses, which is used to track student intern credit and schedule clinical rotations. It also served as a catalyst for the development of a customized web application: The Clinical Internship Portal. Through the portal, rotation scheduling is shared by all clinical faculty and schedule conflicts and errors have dropped to nearly zero.

"This increased efficiency freed up time for clinical faculty to focus on the students' clinical experience through education and patient care," said Melea Fields, chief research officer. The Portal also brings internal and external benchmark assessment data together in one location for analysis and contributes to fulfilling accreditation requirements.
