College Football Playoff Rankings 2015 Release: Clemson on Top, Not Celebrating Yet
ByThe first College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings of the season are out and the committee issued a reminder that they are their own entity.
If the season ended today, the four CFP teams would be as follows: Clemson (1), LSU (2), Ohio State (3), and Alabama (4). The next four teams knocking on the door are: Notre Dame (5), Baylor (6), Michigan State (7), and TCU (8).
Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Tuesday ahead of the CFP rankings' release he and his team would save their celebration for the end of the season, The State reported. And with Florida State (16) visiting on Saturday, the Tigers have more pressing matters to worry about.
"You've got to earn your way there. You don't get any passes, so it has nothing to do with where we are right now," he said. "The only poll that we're excited about is Dec. 6, and I promise you we'll have the biggest poll party you've seen. We'll open up Death Valley and serve pizza to everybody. That'll be a time to celebrate a poll. Until then it doesn't matter."
LSU and Alabama also have no time to celebrate, as they will meet in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. In addition to pitting the nation's best running back against one of the nation's best run defenses, the game could open up a spot among the CFP's Top Four.
While Ohio State has been ranked first in the nation on the AP Top 25 poll since the preseason, the CFP committee proved they operate with their own criteria. Despite a relatively soft schedule, Ohio State has struggled with inconsistency, especially at the quarterback position.
"It's exciting to be back as we kick off the second year of the College Football Playoff," Jeff Long, selection chairman, said in a press release. "We are little more than half way through the season and a lot of football that remains to be played. This is the first of six rankings. They are the result of games that have been played thus far. Change is guaranteed and that's what makes college football exciting."
