Suspended for next weekend's home game against Minnesota, J.T. Barrett will also lose part of his scholarship for his arrest on the charge of operating a vehicle while impaired.

Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer announced Barrett's punishment Monday, two days after news of his suspension broke, according to ESPN. Meyer said Barrett will have the chance to earn his scholarship back.

An Ohio State spokesman confirmed to ESPN and USA Today the redshirt sophomore QB will lose his financial for the summer term, meaning he will remain under scholarship for the remainder of the academic year. He will have the opportunity to regain his scholarship next fall, should he return to the school.

Court records in Franklin County show Barrett will be arraigned on Friday for the misdemeanor charges, which include backing without safety. Barrett was reportedly stopped at a DUI checkpoint near campus early Saturday morning.

While the school does not subject first-time offenders like Barrett to automatic suspensions, Meyer stated keeping him off the field this weekend was his choice.

"I tried to collect as many facts as I could about what actually happened," ESPN quoted Meyer telling reporters Sunday. "I meet with the player; I meet with [athletic director] Gene Smith. Obviously this was a very serious one. I came to the conclusion of one game, and he's also losing a scholarship, forfeiting his scholarship for a term."

Barrett's suspension will give the starting QB role back to Cardale Jones, though Meyer has not sorted out who will start at QB for Ohio State beyond next weekend. USA Today reported. But Meyer did confirm that Braxton Miller is ready to play QB and will be Jones' backup Saturday.

"There's no question he's our No. 2 guy," Meyer said of Miller, according to Cleveland.com. "Almost every game he's had a package of quarterback plays.

"But as far as mechanics of getting a play - we're at home, too, which is good - it's not just running around. It's getting everyone lined up, getting the play, getting the formation and all that... With Braxton, it's no issue."
