A student at Miles College in Fairfield, Ala. was shot and killed late Tuesday night at an apartment building near campus.

Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified Keenen Tajae Morris, a 21-year-old from Mobile, as the victim in the shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:46 p.m., AL.com reported.

Police responded to reports on gunshots being fired at the Lloyd Nolan Apartments around 10 p.m. The apartment building is considered off-campus housing for Miles College students and is sometimes referred to as North Campus.

According to WIAT, the shooter was still at large as of Wednesday morning, though it appears a suspect was taken into custody more toward the afternoon. Alicia Johnson, a spokeswoman for Miles College, said in a statement the school alerted students and asked they remain wherever they were at the time, AL.com reported.

"We did ask students to stay in their rooms and exercise precautionary measures,'' she said. "We have heard two or three different stories.

"We're still waiting to get more information from police this morning."

The Fairfield Police are limiting what information they release, as the investigation is ongoing. However, WBRC learned police have two suspects in custody and that the shooting Tuesday night will not interfere with classes on Wednesday.

It is unclear if Miles College issued a lockdown, but the alert Johnson described was more along the lines of a shelter in place.
