Police responded to a shooting on Tennessee State University's (TSU) campus Thursday night in which one person was killed and three were injured.
The one left dead in the shooting was a 19-year-old male non-student and the three wounded were female students at TSU who police spokesman Don Aaron called "innocent passersby," The Associated Press reported.
Aaron said the confrontation was between the shooter and the 19-year-old man over a dice game that eventually turned physical. Of the three wounded, one was grazed and did not require medical attention while the other two were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. One had been released by Friday morning and the other is expected to make a full recovery, according to The AP.
The shooter fled afterward, so police do not know whether or not the shooter is a student at TSU. However, the police are seeking video from witnesses who reportedly recorded the fight.
"This was an isolated shooting incident in a courtyard," Aaron told reporters at a press conference. "There were never, we believe, any other students in danger in dormitories or elsewhere on campus.
"The person who fired those shots put innocent persons in extreme danger in this isolated incident," he said. "We're hoping that TSU students that have this video, have this knowledge, understand that this person put them in danger tonight and will report what they know."
Last week, three people were wounded in a shooting near TSU and the police are still investigating that case and do not have a suspect in custody. Thursday night's shooting took place shortly after the police met with TSU officials and community members to discuss campus safety, The Tennessean reported.
"We do not believe this was an incidence of a random shooter on campus," Aaron said. "This was an isolated incident resulting from a dispute over a dice game. The Nashville Police Department believes this campus is safe."
