Despite all the winning seasons, Spurrier will be remembered fondly for his engaging personality and his gift for quick-witted trash talk.

ESPN, SB Nation, and For the Win each compiled some of his best quips, but here are a few gems:

Playing Georgia early in the season: "I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

A fire at the Auburn football team's dormitory that destroyed 20 books: "The real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet."

Addressing his age for umpteenth time: "The Pope is 77 years old and he's in charge of a billion people. All I have to do is put 11 on the field."

Jabbing Peyton Manning when he played at Tennessee: "I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl."

But his rivals respected him nonetheless, and several indicated they are sad to see him go. (Quotes via ESPN)

Nick Saban: "I hate it for Steve and hate it for college football. The guy's been one of the best coaches for a long, long time and a great personality for the game."

Charlie Strong: "Nobody jabbed at you the way Coach Spurrier would, and let me tell you, he jabbed at everybody... There won't ever be another one like him because coaches nowadays are too concerned about how it sounds. With him, he just said it."

Bob Stoops: "He's special. He really is and of those guys you come across in life that makes you better just having had a chance to know him."
