Clayton Whittemore, a 21-year-old former high school rising hockey star has been arrested in the murder of his girlfriend who was found dead in her dorm room Saturday.

Whittemore was arrested within hours of discovering the body.

Alexandra Kogut, 18, was a freshman at SUNY-Brockport and had been in a relationship with the accused since high school as both of them were from New Hartford.

He was a Utica College accounting major. He has been charged with second-degree murder, reports DailyMail. Though he has confessed to killing her, he has pleaded not guilty.

Alexandra's body was discovered by the campus police when her mother called them concerned over being not able to reach her.

The county medical examiner confirmed Sunday night that Kogut died from blunt force trauma. School Police Chief Robert Kehoe said Saturday Kogut had 'extensive trauma' to her upper body, reports Democrat and Chronicle.

The family released a statement Sunday evening, describing Alexandra as a 'bright, beautiful young woman' and requested for privacy.

"Alexandra Kogut was a bright, beautiful young woman who was thrilled to be beginning her college education. Her lovely and sweet demeanor was truly infectious and she will forever be missed. Her family is very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and support that they have received from so many friends and neighbors."

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, President John R. Halstead has released a statement mourning over one of their student's death. She was a communications student at the university.

"On behalf of our entire campus community, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexandra Kogut. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones at this difficult time. These are trying times for our campus but I know we will pull together and support each other as we move through the coming days."

The burning question that still remains unanswered is why Whittemore killed her. He has not revealed the reason behind his action as yet.

Kogut's childhood friend Mary Kate Heaton said to The Associated Press that the two appeared 'perfectly content' in the relationship.

Kogut's friends had urged other students to wear purple Monday to raise awareness against domestic violence. A facebook tribute page is filled with condolence messages.

A Remembrance Ceremony was held in the Seymour College Union Ballroom Monday.
