Marquise Stewart, a football player at Albright College, was arrested early Sunday morning for attempted homicide after he stabbed a teammate multiple times in a dorm room.
According to The Reading Eagle, Stewart, 18, stabbed Dhameer Madison, 18, three times in front of other students, who reportedly wrestled him to the floor afterward. Madison is in stable condition at Reading Hospital, a school spokeswoman told the newspaper.
Police said Stewart and Madison were in conflict earlier, but it is not clear how much earlier or what the issue was. At least one other male was in a female student's dorm room with Madison when Stewart entered the room with a multi-tool.
The confrontation between Madison and Stewart quickly escalated, The Eagle learned, as Madison began punching Stewart, who responded by stabbing with the tool's corkscrew. Onlookers managed to separate the two and one student recovered the multi-tool when Stewart dropped it.
Stewart has reportedly been suspended from the Albright football team and from the school while Madison is still listed on the roster, The Eagle learned. Stewart was arraigned later in the day on Sunday for aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, attempted homicide and related offenses. He was then sent to Berks County Prison on $400,000 bail.
"We are deeply concerned anytime an incident such as last night's occurs," Tom Durso, the school's associate vice president for college relations and marketing, said in a statement Sunday. "While each student is responsible for his or her own actions, we will continue to work diligently as a community to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and to ensure that the campus remains as safe a place as possible for our students to study, live, learn, and work in."
