A 19-year-old finance major sophomore at Southern Methodist University was arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of Sept.23.

John David Mahaffey, who also happens to be a Hunt Scholar, was arrested by university police and taken to the Dallas County Sheriffs' department and subsequently booked into Dallas County Jail, official records show.

He was freed after posting a $25,000 bond Wednesday.

According to the SMU's crime alert, a male student reported being sexually assaulted by an acquaintance at two different campus locations about 3 a.m. and again shortly thereafter, on Sunday, September 23, 2012.

First of the assault happened in an alley next to the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house, the other in a parking garage, as per the SMU police reports.

According to his facebook page, Mahaffey is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The university has confirmed Mahaffey's arrest.

Kent Best, executive director of SMU news and communications, released a statement regarding Mahaffey's arrest Wednesday night on behalf of the university.

It stated: "On Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, SMU Police arrested an SMU student for an alleged sexual assault that occurred Sept. 23, 2012, on the SMU campus. SMU Police will present the findings of its investigation to the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. The student is temporarily banned from campus pending further investigation."

Best has not revealed the details about how and where Mahaffey was arrested.

Though, he is released on a bail he won't be able to enter the campus due to the ban.

In the meantime, due to the allegations on him, the Sigma Phi Epsilon has suspended him from the fraternity pending the investigation, reports Pegasus News.

Pegasus News has also acquired the statement from fraternity president Luke Friedman.

"Members are expected to act in accordance with SigEp's values, and clearly, this alleged behavior is not tolerated and not consistent with the Fraternity's mission," he said in the statement.

He added that the fraternity is going to fully cooperate with the authorities.

Citing a Daily Campus article on Mahaffey family, Pegasus News reports that John David Mahaffey is a fourth-generation SMU student. His great-great grandfather was a member of the founding committee for SMU, and served as an interim professor when the university opened.

His grandmother attended the university, along with his father and two of his aunts.

In addition, Mahaffey is the assistant vice president of recruitment for SMU's Inter-fraternity Council (IFC) and a member of Student Senate, according to his Hunt Leadership Scholars Program page.
